Reception Sites

They were so wonderful to work with! The price was definitely right for a small reception like ours, and they let us bring in our own catering (pizza was DH's one request for the wedding from the beginning). They had never done a 'family style' reception, but they were more than willing to work with us on it. Teresa was in constant communication with us from about 5-6 months on, and she helped us find some of the extras we wanted, like cheap pizza pans, without us even asking! The servers were polite and the bartenders were great. DH dropped off all my DIY stuff that morning and they set everything up perfectly. I also really loved the layout of the venue- the bar is through a doorway so it's a smidge separated for those looking for a quieter place. I honestly don't have one complaint about the staff and service, and the setting was beautiful. Lots of places to take photos if you want to go outdoors without traveling.

I LOVED LOVED LOVED my venue, and so did all my guests. The reason they didn't get the full on A was they were a little on the pricey side, but I got a ton of discounts for having a Sunday wedding so it was more reasonable. John is a no-nonsense guy, but he runs his business well so I don't have any complaints. The venue is also like a blank slate, so you can pretty much decorate any way you want to! We didn't pay extra to have them hire us a DOC, but Carla and John were both there at the venue to make sure everything ran well. I can't wait to see the pictures that we were able to take on the roof of the building; however, the one snag of the night was when we were trying to quickly exit the ceremony to the roof and the door was locked, so we were left standing at the end of the room with everyone watching us and the MOHs and BM not sure if they should start down the aisle yet. It was funny though and not a total big deal.

We rented both the 3rd (Studio 1000) and 6th (Penthouse 1000) floors for our ceremony and reception, respectively. The venue was awesome. It's beautiful inside--mostly white interior, white chairs, and huge white light-lined windows with a great view of the city. The location is great, too--downtown KC and walking distance from many hotels. It requires very little decorating, as it's already very elegant. The bride and groom even get to go to the roof for pictures on the day-of. However, I'm so glad we're done dealing with the owner, John. He is very intimidating and controlling. You are required to choose from their list of vendors and he's not at all flexible with allowing otherwise. You will also be charged for the rehearsal and time it takes to decorate--things which I feel should be included in the rental of the space. He says he's very organized...that's a complete lie. He had agreed to let us come in Friday before to decorate, but in the meantime booked another event for Friday event. He failed to let us know as he had no record of telling us that; therefore, we had to scramble around at the last minute to make other arrangements. Due to the inconvenience, he said he wouldn't charge us to decorate, but then "forget" he told us that. We asked for the bar to serve Boulevard products, and he agreed; yet there was no Boulevard beer at the reception. There were times throughout our engagement when we'd send an email with questions and never get a response. When we met with him the week before the wedding, he kept answering the phone and doing other things, rather than giving us his full and undivided attention. He also criticized the DJ we hired just 10 days before our wedding (even though the DJ was from his required list), which I felt was very unprofessional. In the end, it was nothing major or anything that ruined the day, but it seemed like a lot of unnecessary stress and aggravation leading up to the event. We're still waiting for our damage deposit... His assistant, Carla, on the other hand is awesome. It's a great venue, and I wouldn't not book it, but be prepared to deal with a jerk throughout the entire planning process. The Clubhouse on Baltimore
engutshallB-I was happy with the building, the Tudor Room was gorgeous. I wasn't there for the cocktail hour but I hear it went great. My major issue with the venue was that after both I and my mother communicated how many children were coming to the reception and would need children's meals there was a miscommunication between the venue and the caterer. The caterer had NO children's meals. I had to get up and ask a server what was happening, my mom had to go into the kitchen to get answers. The kids were restless without eating and watching everyone else eat. By the time the caterer scraped together meals for the kids all the adults had finished eating the buffet was being cleared. The venue coordinator was also a little snippy at the end of the evening after the guests had left and we were picking up. My intoxicated brother went behind the bar (he shouldn't have been back there but he wasn't getting more alcohol) and she yelled across the room at him, harshly. We were under the impression that they were fine with us taking a half hour to 45 minutes to gather up all stuff but it didn't really seem like it that night. On the other hand they were great with allowing us in to set up and letting DH and I go up on the roof to take pictures. The venue coordinator was also really nice to me, my mom, and DH throughout the entire process.

Working with these ladies was definitely an emotional rollercoaster. They don't seem to communicate with each other and would often give me two different answers to the same question within hours of each other. I spent a lot of time backtracking on issues we had already discussed and trying to figure out who knew what they were talking about. I even had to personally contact the General Manager of the hotel to sort out some things on two occasions. I could write a book about my complaints with the planning process and the wedding coordination staff at The Elms...it was VERY stressful! That being said, our wedding was absolutely beautiful. Our ceremony was held in the gazebo outdoors and our reception was in the Regent Ballroom. They helped set up everything the morning of the event and our guests commented on how lovely their experiences had been. The banquet manager accidentally dropped the top layer of our cake when she was trying to put it into the box and was very apologetic and contacted the caterer herself to arrange for that portion of the cake to be fixed or remade. Despite all of the planning nightmares we had to put up with in the 9 months prior to the wedding, our actual wedding night went very smoothly and was minimallly stressful. I just caution all brides considering The Elms to get EVERYTHING in writing, and be very very very patient!

The venue was exactly what we wanted -- gorgeous and elegant but also comfortable and hip. The food was amazing. I'm still getting compliments on it from my guests. Jacque (and everyone else there, actually) was really great to work with. More than willing to tackle the borage of emails I was shooting their way in the lead up to the wedding. Also very accommodating for out-of-town wedding planners. The venue looked amazing. Very happy. Originally we considered it to be out of our price range, but I'm glad we decided to spend a little more. Definitely worth it for us.

Gorgeous Venue! It reminds me of a ski lodge in Aspen. Wonderful deep colored wood, spanish tiles and vaulted ceilings make this an idyllic setting. They let you bring in your own everything. Your own alcohol. Your own caterer, and so on and so forth. You must set everything up for your reception, but they were very accommodating and let us in the Friday before to set up. Karen is nice to work with. Sometimes very hard to get a hold of when you had questions, but overall a pleasant experience.

A+The place looked AMAZING. Sharon was great to work with and was very helpful. I loved that we could take stuff done Friday afternoon and they would setup everything but the bar areas. We also had until Sunday morning to clean up but we did not need that time. We were really happy with the place and the whole night we got compliments on how unique and beautiful the space was. It easily fit all our guests with room to spare.

The Villa of Kansas City

this is an awesome venue! The location is fabulous, the all-inclusive pricing makes planning so much simpler, we loved the classic architecture, the food is amazing (truly...I couldn't even count all the compliments we received), they have parking, and a day-of coordinator is included---her assistance was invaluable. In the weeks and months beforehand, e-mail inquiries were always answered promptly and thoroughly, and on the days of the wedding and rehearsal, everything was handled perfectly. I can't recommend them more highly. The only downside is that it may be a little small for some larger weddings. It was perfect for us and just what we were looking for...we visited 11 venues and were so relieved when we left The Villa...we'd found just what we wanted.
Matt Ross Community Center
I just wanted to take a moment and express my satisfaction with the Matt Ross Community Center in Overland Park, KS. We had our ceremony in the Hearth Room and the reception immediately following in two of their large conference rooms. Elizabeth, the Leisure Services Rep, was fantastic to work with. The location of MRCC is nearby Old Lenexa so there are beautiful locations nearby to take pictures. Additionally, the cost...I spent under $2000 for the Hearth Room, two conference rooms and the Kitchen, was able to bring in our own food and rent a bartender with no stipulations from the center. I can't recommend this place enough; they really did a sensational job of allowing us to create a wedding that was perfect for us, stayed out of our hair about logistics but still remained available for our questions and concerns.

We looked at several places before choosing them. Not only were their prices some of the best but the food is amazing and the venue is gorgeous! We barely had to add anything to decorate the place because it already had that cool urban feel and beautiful wood and french doors. We worked with the wedding coordinator there Aaron- he was so nice! The ONLY reason I'm docking them some points is we talked about where tables and stuff should be set up ahead of time (so we knew that the mic could reach from the DJ table to the bridal party table, people could see, etc) and it ended up not being set up that way at all. Not a big deal- we were able to get the mic to reach anyway. They also forgot to serve one of our cakes- I think they thought it was the same as our wedding cake but it was a different flavor. The wedding and groom's cake was 100% eaten so we really could have used it too. I'm sure if I asked about it they would have had no problem serving it but I just plain forgot! Other than that- we had our ceremony and reception there and it was a perfect venue for us. Such a beautiful place and everyone there is so nice and helpful!! Great price for all you get!

It all worked out ok which is why I put a B. However, communication with the site coordinator is awful. We were told we could come set up on Friday evening and then when we arrived were told differently. We had our final meeting on May 2nd and she waited until a week prior to let me know that the seating plan I had chosen ( from the ones provided) wasn't going to work. This was in addition to many other communication problems throughout the process.

That place is so freaking cool looking, we really didn't do much to it. My
husband and I looked at more than 30 different venues, and he saw this by himself at first. He liked it so much that it made it into our top four, and
when I saw it I was sold. We used the magnetic wall as a huge photo wall, and had a videobooth in the side room that a lot of people took advantage of. The lounge seating was nice (a good place for my FG to crash), and there was attention to detail, even in the bathroom (which I didn't actually go into, but heard about haha). We had been talking back and forth with one person, and right before the wedding there was a change in coordinators, but nothing was forgotten or miscommunicated. Very friendly and professional, and they made sure the night was going smoothly.

The space was awesome. We loved it. We planned our wedding over 2 years, and so there was some turnover, and some repetiveness of going over the plans, but I assume that's true of anyone who has had a long engagement. Overall, we were very pleased, and the "extras" (e.g., alcohol, glassware) were all reasonably priced. The staff (security, parking, bartenders, event manager, etc.) were all wonderful and we loved having them all at our wedding.

What can I say, they exceeded all my expectations. We wanted a place that was all inclusive so we only had to write one check and not have to worry about a thing. My first marriage and my sister's marriages, family members were younger and could easily help each other out, meaning I "worked" a lot of the weddings. That's not a bad thing, but this time around my sister's and I are older, have kids, and have really busy lives,
so help wasn't going to be as easy. Argosy let me have the reception I wanted without having to depend on family to make it work. I DIYed the centerpieces, dropped them off on Friday, and they decorated everything. It was so beautiful walking in there. The food was great, we got lots of compliments. There is a set menu to choose from, but they did work with us on one of the meat choices to get exactly what we wanted. The only negative thing I can say is that they started tearing down the tables before everybody left. I know it was late, but that is something that should wait until all the guests are gone.
